Q. vehicle Tax laws are changing next year and emmissions will determine
cost of the vehicle tax. Will this be applicable to motorbikes. Is there
any plans to reduce bike tax as part of the green issue.
A. There are currently no plans to base the VED rate for motorcycles on
emissions, although the current 3 tier system is weighted to encourage
people to use smaller, more fuel efficient models. The price
differential between car and bike VED also takes our superior fuel
consumption into account.
The current non-graded system is mainly due to the fact that, unlike
cars, bike manufacturers are not (yet) legally bound to provide emission
/ fuel consumption figures for new machines. This will start to change
within the next 5 or so years as the forthcoming EC emission standards
for bikes become law.
However, for the foreseeable future the current price differential
between the car and bike VED regimes is set to remain with a stepped
system for motorcycles.
